History

VoltaCo Consulting LLC is named after Alessandro Volta (1745 - 1827) an Italian physicist who is most noted for inventing the first electric battery in 1800.  This invention led to a windfall of additional discoveries and technologies in the field of electricity.  In recognition to his contributions, scientists, in 1881, decided to name the unit of measure for electric potential "volt".

VoltaCo Consulting LLC is founded on the principle that through the study of electronic component physics of failure, components can be manufactured with higher robustness against the typical stresses applied during the lifetime of usage in electronic products and assemblies. Furthermore, understanding these stressors and failure mechanisms, electronic products and assemblies can be designed for higher reliability thereby reducing total cost of ownership (from the manufacturer to the consumer).

President

Alessandro Cervone

From working at the prestigious Bell Laboratories and through various acquisitions to GE Embedded Solutions to Apple Data Center Operations to opening his own consulting firm in 2017, Alessandro has become a recognized leader in the electronic industry for component reliability and physics of failure.  His experience and expertise spans the gamut from design to manufacture to customer applications of switching power supplies (from POL's to UPS').  Practicing since the first internet boom, Alessandro has hands-on experience with how pushing the envelop of component technology affects the the long term reliability of electronic products. Staying ahead of the curve is Alessandro’s sixth sense.

Our namesake

Alessandro Volta

Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta was born on February 18th 1745 in Como, Ducato di Milano, Italy.

He was a professor of physics at the Royal School in Como when, and in 1775, he improved on the Swedish professor, Johan Wilcke's electrophorus device which was used to generate static electricity.  During his study of the chemistry of gases, between 1776 and 1778, he discovered Methane and proceeded to experiment in finding a way to safely ignite the gas using a spark inside a closed container.

Concurrently, Alessandro Volta was also experimenting with electro capacitance to determine the relationship between Electrical Potential and Charge and concluded that a relationship did exist which later became knows as Volta’s Law of Capacitance.

In the following years, Volta discovered the electrochemical series of metals (an important discovery which helps predict many electrochemical reactions).   This discovery was made when he reviewed the work performed by Luigi Galvani, another Italian physicist, whom had been conducting experiments with frog legs and two types of metals connected to them.  Volta replaced the frog legs with paper soaked in brine and realized that this experiment duplicated results he had obtained from previous experiments.

In 1800, Volta announced that he invented the "voltaic pile", the "first electrochemical cell consisting of two electrodes, one made of copper and the other from zinc and a type electrolyte made of saltwater brine or sulfuric acid mixed with water."  This is what we call in modern day, the battery.

In recognition to his contributions to the science of electricity, scientists, in 1881, decided to name the unit of measure for electric potential "volt".
